Adrian Poon, Center Director
Adrian was born and raised in Hong Kong. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology. He has worked as a research assistant for two years in college, mainly focused on Geoarchaeology. Adrian knows that many kids have more struggles in learning math than other subjects. He wants to use his past experience to help all kids fall in love with math. Adrian has also spent his college life as a student athlete. He has represented the Cal Table Tennis Team in regionals and nationals competitions.
Christianne Joseph John, Assistant Center Director
Christianne was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago. She recently moved to Hong Kong for the family. She had a Bachelor Degree in Physics with minors in Material Science and Environmental Physics at University of the West Indies. She realized that children failed Math because they lacked confidence in their ability, so she entered teaching after University and taught children ages 11-19 years, Math and Physics for over 12 years. She has also taught adult remedial classes. She then pursued Civil and Coastal Engineering and earned her Bachelors and Masters at the University of the West Indies and worked as an Engineer before migrating. She however, never forgot her love for teaching and has used remedial teaching experience at Mathnasium to build student confidence in Math.
Sau Lau, Management Trainee
Sau graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a BS degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Before going into teaching, she worked in the IT industry in software development and user support.
Sau enjoys helping kids learn math as a problem solving tool. She values in nurturing a growth mindset and believes that student are defined by what they have gotten better at, instead of their mistakes.
Alan Leung, Lead Instructor
Alan believes that students can learn Math the best when they take it as if an interest rather than just an academic subject. It is his pleasure to inspire students by teaching them to learn Math with the Mathnasium method because he does not agree with the traditional education system that mostly emphasizes on memorization and speed testing. His favorite time in teaching is when students master in the Math skills as well as to see their confidence growth. It gives him lots of satisfaction and motivation. ”In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.” – Alan Leung
Charles Schmitt, Instuctor
Charles is an American who has lived in Hong Kong for over 25 years. He has a MBA in Finance from New York University. He was a financial analyst at the New York Stock Exchange. He also had a MS degree in Economics at Georgetown University, and a BA in English at the University of Missouri.
Charles and his wife moved to Hong Kong shortly after they were married and their 3 children were born. He has been involved in finance and investment management in Hong Kong meanwhile he does a lot of volunteering work at church.
Being an instructor at Mathnasium offers him the opportunity to unleash his math skills and experiences of business in helping children grow in the community.
Joe (Coskun) Dizmen, Instuctor
Joe (Coskun) Dizmen received his PhD degree in Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management from HKUST with a prestigious award called HK PhD Fellowship. He received his bachelor's degree from CityU of HK, being the student with the highest GPA in his graduation batch.
He holds the following teaching certificates: (i) Certificate of Achievement in Teaching Assistant Training Program (by HKUST), (ii) Chess Trainer’s Certificate (by Turkish Chess Federation), (iii) Teaching English as a Foreign Language (by Bridge Online TEFL), (iv) Teaching Pronunciation (by London Teacher Training College, and Cambridge University Press & Cambridge English Language Assessment).
Before joining Mathnasium in January 2018, he worked for universities and math centers in Mainland China and Hong Kong.
Michelle Wong, Instructor
Michelle was born and raised in Hong Kong. She completed a BSc degree in Computing and information Systems at the University of London. As a private tutor in the past two years, Michelle has the passion in teaching children, especially in math, helping them to understand this language of thoughts and building up their confidence in learning. She is delighted to be furthering her career by joining Mathnasium. in her leisure time, she likes cooking and reading.
Nelson Tai, Instructor
Nelson has over 3 years experiences in education including Special Needs Education. He is experienced in teaching Olympic Math as well. His passion in teaching Math is the priority of his life because Math makes him feel better even when he is sick. Apart from Math, snooker and bowling are also big parts of his life. He plays Chinese chess as well during his free time.
Riaan Claase, Instructor
Riaan was a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering for 24 years in Durban, South Africa. He moved to Hong Kong in 2008 and worked as a Math and English Teacher at different Learning Centres. He is also a part time Artist and Cartoonist and conducts handwriting analysis workshops in Hong Kong, having a keen interest in personality, expression and psychology.
He loves teaching kids and his mission is to make learning fun. He often uses his cartoons to bring smiles to his students faces.
Stella Ham, Instructor
Stella is a BBA student in Hong Kong. She joined our team with great passion in teaching. She loves working and engaging with students. In Mathnasium, she will not only be happy to help you with the work but will also be glad to talk to you, to get to know you better. She enjoys playing sports and reading at her leisure.
Trisky Ying, Instructor
Trisky was born in HK and moved to Canada when she was in high school. She grew to love mathematics while she studied in Canada. She completed a B.Sc. degree in Statistics at the University of Toronto.
Trisky believes that mathematics is training in logical thinking and practice to be detail-oriented. She understands the importance of grasping the fundamental concepts rather than just memorizing the rules. "Practice makes perfect" is a motto that Trisky encourages students to do math exercises in enhancing their knowledge. She enjoys seeing students grow confidence in mathematics and would like to share fun time with them at Mathnasium.
